Screens for iOS 4.10 out now!

Here’s what’s new in this version:

Quick Connect

You can now enter a URL in the new Quick Connect view:

Quick Connect also supports Screens Express links and will show those as well in your recent connections.

To learn more about URL schemes supported by Screens, please consult this article.

Keyboard Shortcuts

We added convenient shortcuts to both the Library and Connection views:

As you can see, we took the opportunity to refresh the Library view visually.

To see a list of available shortcuts, simply hold the Command key on your hardware keyboard.

Control ↔ Command

Like we wrote in our previous blog post, iOS keeps some keyboard shortcuts for itself so it is not possible for 3rd apps to access them:

  • Command-Q
  • Command-Space
  • Command-H

New in Screens 4.10: you can now permute the Control and Command keys in order to regain control over these system shortcuts.

For example, when this mode is enabled pressing Control-Q will actually send Command-Q to the remote computer.

Additionally, you can also enable key repeat when holding a key down and turn off the shortcuts toolbar hardware keyboard more (see previous blog post).

Local Network Access

New hoop to jump through feature Apple is introducing in iOS 14. You will now be prompted when apps use the Bonjour protocol in order to find and access computers on your local network:

Not allowing would result in Screens not being able to detect nearby computers or connect to them.

If you inadvertently selected “Don’t Allow”, you can always give Screens access from the Settings app under Privacy > Local Network:

As far as we know, it is not possible for apps to know if you allowed them access or not so they won’t be able to warning you of this. We’re not sure if this is a bug or by design but the latter would not surprise us.

If any of your installed apps relying on connectivity suddenly stops working after upgrading to iOS 14, it may a good idea to check there as well.

Availability

You can get Screens 4.10 on the App Store for $19.99 or as a free update for current Screens 4 users. Please note that it requires iOS 14.

We hope you enjoy this new version!

Screens 4.8 for Mac

We’re also working on an updated version of Screens on the Mac, which should be available when macOS 11 Big Sur is released by Apple. Screens 4.8 will be a free update to current Screens 4 users.

And of course, we’ll make sure that Screens Connect and Screens Express work smoothly on Big Sur as well!
