Today, we're making an important change to Motorist.
Starting with Motorist 2026.2, the app is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no paywall, and no features locked behind a purchase. If you use Motorist today—or decide to give it a try—you'll have access to everything the app has to offer.
Version 2026.2 also adds support for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. We plan to release another update in October to ensure the app looks good on iPhone Duo.
After that, Motorist will enter maintenance mode.
Why we're making this change
Motorist has always been a bit of a niche product. It was designed for people who like keeping detailed records of their vehicles: maintenance, fuel consumption, expenses, reminders, and everything else that comes with owning and caring for a vehicle.
As it turns out, there aren't that many people who want to be quite that methodical about vehicle maintenance!
Despite our efforts over the years, Motorist never became a commercial success. After 4 years on the App Store, the app has only about 150 paid subscribers. We're incredibly grateful to every one of you who chose to support Motorist, but at that scale, we simply can't justify the time and resources required to continue developing major new features.
Rather than discontinue the app entirely, we think there's a much better way forward: make Motorist free and let everyone continue using it.
What happens to my subscription?
We've discontinued Motorist's subscriptions, so your existing subscription will not renew when its current period expires. You don't need to cancel anything or take any action.
If you subscribed or renewed recently and would like to request a refund, you can contact Apple through their billing and refund service:
https://support.apple.com/billing
Refund requests are handled by Apple and are subject to Apple's policies.
Regardless of your subscription status, you now have access to all of Motorist's features for free.
What does maintenance mode mean?
Motorist isn't going away.
The app should continue working indefinitely, and our intention is to release compatibility updates alongside future versions of iOS and iPadOS so that Motorist continues to run properly for as long as it's reasonably possible for us to maintain it.
What we won't be doing is actively developing new features or substantially expanding the app.
Eventually, changes to iOS, development tools, or other technologies may make maintaining Motorist impractical. We don't know when—or even if—that will happen, but we want to be transparent that Motorist is no longer under active feature development.
We’ll also continue to provide support for Motorist. However, as the app is now in maintenance mode, support will primarily focus on helping with existing functionality rather than feature requests or significant changes to the app.
Your data remains yours
All of your existing Motorist data remains available in the app.
If you'd like to keep a copy outside of Motorist, you can export your data at any time from the app's Settings. This option will remain available, and we encourage anyone keeping important long-term vehicle records in Motorist to periodically export a backup.
Thank you
Finally, a sincere thank you to everyone who subscribed to Motorist over the years.
Your support allowed us to keep developing and maintaining an app that we know some of you genuinely rely on. While Motorist never found a large enough audience to sustain continued feature development, we're happy that it can live on as a free app rather than simply disappearing.
If you've been curious about Motorist but never tried it, there's never been a better time. And if you've been using it for years, nothing changes about how you use it—except that you'll never have to pay for it again.
Thank you for using Motorist.
